Google taking on The ‘Book in a big way. My initial reactions:
- In positioning the service, Google is doing a great job of connecting to the emotional aspect of social networking, something they’ve recently been doing a great job of, especially in their Chrome ads.
- I’m a little torn on the concept of “Circles” and whether overemphasizing this feature could lead to labeling people and potentially preventing users from discovering new things about their acquaintances. The tone of the marketing message on this doesn’t have the same warmth as it does for the other features, so it’ll be very interesting to see how this develops.
Overall, I’m looking forward to the impact that a solid social networking alternative can have on Facebook. The distribution channels (e.g. Android phones and Google.com) are already huge and should definitely book Team Zuckerberg on watch.
